Alfredo, Alfredo is a 1972 French-Italian comedy directed by Pietro Germi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Leonardo Benvenuti. Its hero, Alfredo, is a shy, withdrawn bank clerk who falls for the beautiful Mariarosa and marries her, only to find married life increasingly suffocating; his attempt to escape the union pulls him into the tangled legal battles of an Italy where divorce has only just become possible. The title role is played by American actor Dustin Hoffman, whose lines were dubbed into Italian by Ferruccio Amendola, while the supporting cast includes Stefania Sandrelli, Carla Gravina and Gianni Rizzo. Through its satirical look at marriage and divorce in Italian society, the film won the David di Donatello award for Best Film.
