Angelica and the King (Angélique et le Roy)

Angélique et le Roy (Angelica and the King) is the third film in the series based on Anne Golon's Angélique novels. Directed by Bernard Borderie and dated 1966, this historical adventure was a co-production between France, Italy and West Germany; it blends swashbuckling action with romance in a costume setting. The film of about 100 minutes was shot in French and sits in the middle of a five-film cycle about Angélique.

Michèle Mercier leads as Angélique, the series' heroine, whose struggle continues amid intrigue around the court of King Louis XIV. Alongside her the cast includes Jean Rochefort, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Giuliano Gemma, Ernst Schröder, Charles Régnier, Jacques Toja, François Maistre, Rosalba Neri, Jacques Hilling, Serge Marquand, Pietro Tordi, Robert Hoffmann and Federico Boido. Borderie wrote the screenplay with Daniel Boulanger and Alain Decaux.

Interiors were filmed at the Billancourt Studios in Paris, and location work took place at Versailles, the Abbey of Fontenay, the Château de Chantilly and Senlis. The sets were designed by art director Robert Giordani.
