Eréndira

Eréndira is a 1983 drama film directed by Ruy Guerra, with a screenplay by Nobel Prize-winning Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. The original script actually predated his celebrated 1972 novella of nearly the same name; after it was lost, García Márquez recreated it from memory for the film. The characters of Eréndira and her grandmother had already appeared briefly in his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude.

An international co-production involving Mexico, France and West Germany, the film was shot in Spanish on locations such as San Luis Potosí, Veracruz and Zacatecas. Cláudia Ohana plays the innocent Eréndira and Irene Papas her heartless grandmother. The film premiered on 14 May 1983 at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Mexico's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 56th Academy Awards, though it was not nominated.
