Face

Face (Visage) is a 2009 comedy-drama written and directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang, commissioned by the Louvre Museum. The film follows a Taiwanese director who arrives at the vast Paris museum to shoot a movie about the legend of Salome. As production begins, problems pile up: first the director's mother dies, and then her ghost appears. Blending themes of loss and mourning with a humorous, absurdist tone, the film brings together Tsai's regular collaborator Lee Kang-sheng and cult French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud. The ensemble cast also includes Fanny Ardant, Jeanne Moreau, Nathalie Baye, Laetitia Casta and Mathieu Amalric. A French-Taiwanese-Belgian-Dutch co-production, Face premiered in official competition at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
