Flatfoot in Egypt (Piedone d’Egitto)
Stefano Vanzina, better known as Steno, directed Flatfoot in Egypt, known in Italy as Piedone d'Egitto, a 1980 Italian film starring Bud Spencer. It leans on the comic side of the poliziottesco, the Italian cop-film tradition, and runs 104 minutes. It is the fourth and last chapter of the "Piedone" series, preceded by Flatfoot, Flatfoot in Hong Kong and Flatfoot in Africa; it is also known internationally as Flatfoot on the Nile.
At the center of the series is Manuele Rizzo, a hefty police inspector in Naples whom everyone calls "Piedone", or "Flatfoot". His assistant Pedro Caputo is at his side. This time the pair head to Egypt, where Rizzo goes looking for Professor Cerullo, who was kidnapped after discovering an insect that lives only in places where oil is found. Alongside Bud Spencer, the cast includes Enzo Cannavale, Angelo Infanti, Cinzia Monreale, Leopoldo Trieste, Robert Loggia, Giovanni Cianfriglia and Venantino Venantini.
The screenplay was written by Massimo Franciosa, Adriano Bolzoni and Steno together. The film also did well abroad: released in Hungary in 1981, it drew more than three million admissions and was the most popular film shown there that year. It reached German audiences as Plattfuß am Nil, Spanish ones as Zapatones, and was dubbed into Persian for release in Iran.
