Last Summer (Geçen Yaz)

Last Summer (Geçen Yaz) is a 2021 Turkish youth film that sits between romantic drama and coming-of-age story. It was directed by Ozan Açıktan, who wrote the script together with Sami Berat Marçali. It arrived on Netflix on July 9, 2021 and runs about 101 minutes.

The story unfolds in a seaside town in the late 1990s. Deniz, who is sixteen, returns with his family for their usual summer holiday. He plans to tell Aslı, a friend since childhood, how he feels, only to notice that she is spending time with Burak, who is older than he is. His innocent first love gets tangled with jealousy and feelings that are not returned, and the film uses that one summer to portray the fragility of adolescence, its disappointments and the clumsiness of growing up.

The leading roles go to Ece Çeşmioğlu, Fatih Berk Şahin, Halit Özgür Sarı and Aslıhan Malbora.
