La Chamade

La Chamade, also titled Heartbeat in English, is a 1968 French-Italian romantic drama directed by Alain Cavalier. Running about 103 minutes, it is adapted from Françoise Sagan's 1965 novel of the same name. Cavalier and Sagan wrote the screenplay together. The film is about a young woman caught between two men, and between comfort and passion.

At its centre is a young woman named Lucile, played by Catherine Deneuve. Lucile is torn between the comfortable life provided by Charles, her older and wealthy lover, and Antoine, a working-class man her own age. Michel Piccoli plays the older lover and Roger Van Hool the younger man. On one side stands a secure but dependent arrangement, on the other a passionate but uncertain future. The cast also includes Jacques Sereys, Philippine Pascal, Irène Tunc, Hamidou Benmassoud, Jean-François Stévenin and Jean-Pierre Castaldi.

The film's Russian title is Капитуляция (Capitulation), and its tagline runs: "The heart has many rooms, some of them full, most of them empty."
