Jacques Sereys — Biography

Jacques Sereys was born on 2 June 1928 in Saint-Maurice. After training at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique, he joined the Comédie-Française, where he became celebrated for his interpretations of the classical repertoire, particularly Molière, eventually rising to honorary membership of the company. He received numerous honours, including the Molière Award, the rank of Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Commander of the National Order of Merit, and Knight of the Legion of Honour.

He made his screen debut in 1956 with Molière, and went on to appear in Louis Malle's The Fire Within (1963) and Murmur of the Heart (1971), as well as the widely seen On Guard (1997). He married the wine magnate Philippine de Rothschild; their children, Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, now lead the family business.

Jacques Sereys died in Paris on 31 December 2022.
