Holding Canadian and French citizenship, she worked with director François Truffaut on several films, including The Bride Wore Black, Mississippi Mermaid and Day for Night. She also appeared in Roman Polanski's Frantic and in earlier productions such as Les liaisons dangereuses and L'eau à la bouche.
Beyond cinema, Stewart was a regular television presence, appearing on shows such as Les Jeux de 20 heures and L'Académie des neuf, lending her voice to the 1981 cartoon Space Stars, and taking guest roles in Highlander: The Series and The Saint.
