Day for Night (Amerikan Gecesi (film))

Day for Night is a 1973 French-Italian comedy-drama directed by François Truffaut, who co-wrote the screenplay with Suzanne Schiffman and Jean-Louis Richard. The metafictional story follows the troubled shoot of a melodrama called 'Meet Pamela', as director Ferrand and his cast and crew wrestle with personal crises, technical setbacks and unexpected events while trying to finish the picture. Truffaut plays Ferrand himself, alongside Jacqueline Bisset, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Valentina Cortese, Alexandra Stewart and Nathalie Baye. The title refers to the filming technique in which night scenes are shot in daylight using special filters, and the film stands as an affectionate tribute to everyone who works behind the camera.

The film premiered out of competition at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film the following year. It was later nominated for Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Cortese, and also collected three BAFTA Awards. Retrospective criticism regards it as one of Truffaut's finest achievements and one of the greatest films ever made.
