Love on the Run (L'amour en fuite)

Movie · 1979 · 2 people

Released in 1979, the French romantic comedy-drama L'amour en fuite (Love on the Run) is François Truffaut's fifth and final film devoted to Antoine Doinel, played once again by Jean-Pierre Léaud. Now in his mid-thirties, Antoine has a musically gifted young son, is divorcing his wife Christine (Claude Jade), and is involved with Sabine, a record-shop clerk with whom he struggles just as much to communicate. His past, meanwhile, catches up with him when his first love Colette (Marie-France Pisier) re-enters his life.

The story unfolds nonlinearly, drawing extensively on clips from the four earlier Doinel films, beginning with The 400 Blows, as flashbacks that trace the character's whole journey. The result works both as a recap for longtime admirers of the series and as an affectionate farewell to Truffaut's alter ego. The film was entered into the 29th Berlin International Film Festival.
