Lady L
Peter Ustinov directed Lady L, a 1965 comedy-drama based on Romain Gary's 1958 novel of the same name. A co-production between France, the United Kingdom and Italy, it stars Sophia Loren, Paul Newman and David Niven. The film is in English and Italian, runs about 117 minutes and was shot in CinemaScope at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
The story begins when the 80-year-old Lady Louise Lendale, known as Lady L, starts telling her life to a young admirer, Sir Percy. Her memories, told in flashbacks, reach from a youth spent in a Paris brothel to the Russian Revolution. Two great loves shaped her life: an idealistic anarchist and the English aristocrat Lord Lendale, who lifts her into high society. Sophia Loren plays Louise and David Niven is Lord Lendale. Philippe Noiret, Cecil Parker, Michel Piccoli and Marcel Dalio (as Sapper) are also in the cast, along with Claude Dauphin, Catherine Allégret and Joe Dassin.
Ustinov also wrote the screenplay, and Les Films Concordia is the production company. The ending departs markedly from that of the novel.
