Namus (film, 1925)

Namus (Armenian: Նամուս, "honor") is a 1925 Soviet silent drama directed by Hamo Beknazarian and widely recognized as the first Armenian feature film. Beknazarian adapted the screenplay together with Alexander Shirvanzade from Shirvanzade's 1885 novel of the same name; some sources date the film's release to 1926.

Running about 62 minutes, the film is a denunciation of the despotic rites and rigid honor codes governing Caucasian family life. It was produced by Armenia's state film organization jointly with the Georgian state cinema authority (Goskinprom).

The large cast includes Hıraçya Nersesyan alongside noted Armenian stage figures such as Hovhannes Abelian, Avet Avetisyan, Nina Manucharyan and Hasmik. Namus is counted among the significant works of Soviet silent cinema.
