Ophelia

Ophelia is a 1963 French drama film directed by Claude Chabrol, who co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Gégauff. Loosely inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet, it follows Yvan, a troubled young man who cannot accept his mother Claudia's marriage to his uncle Adrien shortly after his father's death. Yvan becomes obsessed with the idea that his own life mirrors Hamlet's fate and holds his mother and uncle responsible for his father's death.

The film stars Alida Valli as Claudia Lesurf and André Jocelyn as Yvan, with Chabrol himself playing Adrien. Shot in black and white and in French, the cast also includes Claude Cerval, Dominique Zardi and Henri Attal.
