Ophelia

Ophelia (French spelling Ophélia) is a 1963 French drama directed by Claude Chabrol. Spoken in French, shot in black and white and running about 105 minutes, it was written by Chabrol with Paul Gégauff and adapts William Shakespeare's Hamlet freely. Its focus is a disturbed young man who becomes convinced that his own life mirrors Hamlet's fate.

That young man is Yvan Lesurf, played by André Jocelyn. Soon after his father dies, his mother Claudia (Alida Valli) marries her late husband's brother Adrien (Claude Cerval). Yvan cannot accept the marriage; he blames his mother and uncle for his father's death and starts to believe that what he lives through matches what Hamlet lived through. As the story goes on, something about Yvan's true identity also comes to light. Juliette Mayniel plays Lucie, and Dominique Zardi, Henri Attal, Jean-Louis Maury, László Szabó, Liliane David, Pierre Vernier, Roger Carel and Serge Bento are also in the cast.
