Delicatessen (Şarküteri)

Delicatessen is a 1991 French post-apocalyptic black comedy, the feature directing debut of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. Set in an indeterminate time in France, where food has become almost impossible to find and strange eating habits have taken hold, the story unfolds inside a single apartment block. Louison, a former clown, answers a job advertisement and becomes the building's handyman, replacing his predecessor, who tried to flee hidden in a garbage bin. The landlord Clapet, the butcher who runs the shop below and keeps the residents under his control, has dark plans for his new tenant. Matters grow complicated when Louison falls in love with the butcher's daughter. The building is populated by eccentric figures, including frog breeders and the underground-dwelling troglodistes. Dominique Pinon, Marie-Laure Dougnac and Jean-Claude Dreyfus star. The film won four César Awards and several prizes at Sitges, was released in North America as 'presented by Terry Gilliam,' and went on to achieve cult status.
