The Green Mare

The Green Mare (French: La Jument verte) is a 1959 French-Italian comedy-drama directed by Claude Autant-Lara and adapted from Marcel Aymé's novel of the same name. Set in the French countryside during the second half of the 19th century, the story follows two peasant families locked in a long-running feud, treating rural rivalries and village life with sharp humor. The screenplay was written by Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost, and the ensemble cast is led by Bourvil, Francis Blanche, Yves Robert and Sandra Milo, with Georges Wilson and Marie Déa among the supporting players. Premiering on 29 October 1959, the film drew more than five million admissions in France, making it one of the notable popular successes of its year. Running around 90 minutes, it reflects Autant-Lara's fondness for satirical literary adaptations.
