Devil in the Flesh

Directed by Claude Autant-Lara and released in 1947, the French drama Le Diable au corps (Devil in the Flesh) draws on Raymond Radiguet's 1923 novel of the same name. The screenplay is credited jointly to the director along with Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost. Its provocative subject matter, a forbidden romance that defied the moral expectations of its era, stirred controversy on release even as many critics abroad praised the work. Micheline Presle and Gérard Philipe headline the film, with Jacques Tati, Denise Grey and Jean Debucourt appearing in supporting parts, alongside Albert Rémy, Edmond Beauchamp and Jeanne Pérez in smaller roles.

Filming took place at the Boulogne and Neuilly studios near Paris as well as at various outdoor locations around the city, with production design handled by Max Douy. The picture later earned a spot among a national review board's year-end list of standout films. As a French production made not long after the war, it circulated internationally under a range of translated titles.
