The Young Girls of Rochefort

The Young Girls of Rochefort (Les Demoiselles de Rochefort) is a 1967 French musical romantic comedy written and directed by Jacques Demy. Real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac star as twin sisters living with their mother in Rochefort — one a piano teacher, the other a dance teacher — whose lives are upended by two visiting strangers, a young artist named Maxence arriving for his military service, and Simon, a Parisian businessman hoping to reunite with his lover.

Michel Legrand composed the score to Demy's lyrics, with dance sequences choreographed by Norman Maen; its famous numbers include "Chanson des Jumelles" and the song later reworked as "You Must Believe in Spring". A success in France with 1.32 million admissions, the film earned an Academy Award nomination for musical scoring and was adapted into a French stage musical in 2003 by Alain Boublil.
