Trivial (La Disparue de Deauville)

Movie · 2007 · 4 people

A 2007 French crime drama and thriller, Trivial was first titled Trivial and is known in France as La Disparue de Deauville (“The Missing Woman of Deauville”). Sophie Marceau directed it, her second feature as a director. She co-wrote the screenplay with Gianguido Spinelli and Jacques Deschamps and also appears in the cast. The film runs 103 minutes and opened in France on 23 May 2007. In Germany it was released as Zimmer 401 – Rückkehr aus der Vergangenheit.

At its centre is a police inspector battling depression after his wife's death. At the request of a mysterious woman, he starts looking into a suspicious missing-person case. He is sometimes described as a paranoid criminal investigator. Christopher Lambert plays the role, with Sophie Marceau and Nicolas Briançon alongside him. Marilou Berry, Judith Magre and Jacques Boudet are in the cast, as are Simon Abkarian, Robert Hossein, Marie-Christine Barrault, Firmine Richard, Samir Guesmi, Laure Duthilleul, Magali Woch and Jean-Paul Bonnaire.

Shooting took place in Normandy, with much of it in Le Havre, including the Espace Coty shopping centre and streets such as rue Pasteur.

Through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Sophie Marceau's second feature as director makes her ambitions behind the camera plain: she co-wrote it and acts in it too. A widowed, depressed inspector and a dubious missing-person case brought by a mysterious woman are familiar noir ingredients. Christopher Lambert's weary inspector is a face that suits the mood. The story leans too heavily on genre formula, though, and the mystery sometimes seems to get by on vagueness rather than depth. Using everyday places such as the streets of Le Havre and a shopping centre gives the film a cold but distinctive texture. A wide cast running from Robert Hossein to Simon Abkarian adds weight.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A paranoid criminologist, a mysterious woman and a suspicious missing-person case: a good start for a thriller. But this looks more like a brainy crime story. If you want chases or shootouts you may get restless. If you like atmosphere and slow-burn mysteries, the 103 minutes will pass; if you want speed, knock on another door.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Trivial is a thriller about a widowed police officer, fighting depression, who digs into a dark case. It deals with heavy themes like grief, loss and mystery. Not for children, and teens may get bored. It is one for adults who like crime stories to watch on their own, not one to put on when the whole family is gathered.
