Sophie Marceau — Biography

Sophie Marceau, born Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu in Paris on 17 November 1966, is a French actress, director and screenwriter. She entered cinema at the age of thirteen in Claude Pinoteau's La Boum (1980), and its sequel La Boum 2 (1982) made her the first recipient of the César Award for Most Promising Actress. A run of popular French productions such as L'Étudiante (1988), Pacific Palisades (1990), Fanfan (1993) and Revenge of the Musketeers (1994) established her as a major European star. In the second half of the 1990s she moved into English-language films, gaining worldwide recognition as Princess Isabelle in Braveheart (1995) and as the Bond antagonist Elektra King in The World Is Not Enough (1999), alongside roles in Firelight and Anna Karenina (both 1997). Her later work includes socially engaged pictures such as Arrêtez-moi (2013), Jailbirds (2015) and Everything Went Fine (2021). She has appeared on more than three hundred magazine covers, was named Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2003, and revealed in 2015 that she had declined the Legion of Honour.
