Fort Saganne

Fort Saganne is a 1984 French historical war drama directed by Alain Corneau and based on Louis Gardel's 1980 novel of the same title. The story centers on Charles Saganne (Gérard Depardieu), a young officer from modest roots who signs up for duty in the Sahara in 1911. Posted to a remote desert fort with his devoted Arab sergeant Embarek, he carries out expeditions and successful military operations for France and becomes smitten with Madeleine (Sophie Marceau), the daughter of the local administrator. A diplomatic posting in Paris brings a passing romance with the journalist Louise (Catherine Deneuve); once back in Africa, he leads a courageous stand against a dreaded sultan and is decorated with the Legion of Honour. He comes home a national hero and weds Madeleine, only for their happiness to be shattered by the outbreak of World War I. The most expensive French production of its day, the film screened out of competition at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and picked up four César nominations in 1985, among them Best Actor for Depardieu.
