Don't Look Back (Ne te retourne pas)
Marina de Van's 2009 psychological thriller Don't Look Back (original title Ne te retourne pas) carries horror and drama elements. It was released in Turkey as Dönüşüm on 4 December 2009. A co-production of France, Italy and Luxembourg, it was shown out of competition at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. It runs 111 minutes.
At its centre is Jeanne, a writer who is married and has two children. She starts to see unsettling differences in the arrangement of her home and feels her own body changing, yet nobody around her notices. Those close to her wave off her fears as tiredness and the pressure of the book she is writing, while Jeanne believes something far deeper is going on. A photograph found at her mother's house takes her to Italy and sets her on the trail of a woman, Rosa Maria, who holds the key to the mystery. Sophie Marceau and Monica Bellucci together play Jeanne, and the cast also includes Brigitte Catillon, Andrea Di Stefano, Thierry Neuvic and Didier Flamand.
De Van wrote the screenplay with Jacques Akchoti. Built on questions of identity and the body, the film divides viewers: Turkish audience comments describe a first half that is hard going and a second half that puts the pieces in place.
