Turist Ömer Boğa Güreşçisi

Tourist Ömer the Bullfighter (Turist Ömer Boğa Güreşçisi) (translated)

Movie · 1971 · 15 people

Turist Ömer Boğa Güreşçisi ("Tourist Ömer the Bullfighter") was made in 1971 as a Turkish comedy. Hulki Saner both directed and produced it, and Oksal Pekmezoğlu wrote the screenplay. Running about 97 minutes, it is the ninth film in the series built around Sadri Alışık's Turist Ömer character, which ran to ten films. Alışık takes the lead, and Erol Büyükburç and Feri Cansel are also in the cast.

Turist Ömer finds a wallet on the street and decides to return it to its owner. The singer Rodrigez, who lost it, has promised a trip to Spain with him to whoever brings it back. Ömer hands the wallet over and the two head for Spain. There Ömer gets mixed up in a robbery and runs into trouble with the police. To escape, he disguises himself as a bullfighter and ends up in the arena facing a real bull. The title comes from this adventure.

Erol Büyükburç plays Rodrigez and Feri Cansel plays Manolya. Sadri Alışık drives the series and carries Turist Ömer here too. Some viewers count the film among the better entries of the series and say Alışık's performance has not aged.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Turist Ömer is Yeşilçam's most lovable vagabond, and this film shows well why the character was loved: a man who makes it his business to return a wallet he finds on the street, pure of heart however much trouble he gets into. The type Sadri Alışık created recalls a humour that makes you laugh without looking down on anyone. It is no surprise that some viewers rank this among the series' better entries and say Alışık's performance has not aged. Erol Büyükburç appearing as a singer is a small reminder of the warm bond between the cinema and music of those years.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Judging by its story, a light adventure that starts with honesty: Ömer returns a wallet he has found. The idea of facing a real bull in the arena may amuse children, but anyone sensitive to bullfighting scenes should know beforehand. Being an old comedy, some jokes and attitudes may not match today's standards. A nice choice to watch with grandparents; little ones are better off with an adult beside them.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

The film bears every mark of being the ninth link in a series. The plot is a chain of excuses for moving the character somewhere new: the found wallet leads to a trip to Spain, the trip to a robbery, the robbery to a disguise. That structure lays bare Yeşilçam's habit of sending a successful character to new places and bringing him back again and again. Script and direction are mostly functional; what holds the film up is how well Sadri Alışık knows his character. An enjoyable entry for the series' loyal audience, but hardly the place to start for anyone new to Turist Ömer.
