Oh Beautiful Istanbul (Ah Güzel İstanbul) (translated)

Ah Güzel İstanbul is a 1966 black-and-white Turkish black comedy directed by Atıf Yılmaz, from a screenplay co-written by Safa Önal and Ayşe Şasa. The film follows Haşmet İbriktaroğlu, an old Istanbul gentleman who becomes a street photographer after squandering his family fortune, and Ayşe, a young woman who runs away from her home in İzmir hoping to become a movie star in Istanbul.

Starring Sadri Alışık and Ayla Algan, the film features cinematography by Gani Turanlı and music by Metin Bükey. Through this love story, it examines Türkiye's conflict between traditional and Western ways of life, placing Turkish music at the heart of that cultural tension. While praising traditional values, friendship and love, it criticizes blind imitation of the West and closes with a hopeful message in the classic Yeşilçam tradition. The film received the "Silver Tree" award at the Bordighera International Humor Film Festival.
