Nüvit Özdoğru — Biography

Nüvit Özdoğru was born on 5 May 1925 in Istanbul and died there on 20 June 2002. After graduating from the Literature Department of Robert College in 1946, he studied in the United States at the University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin between 1950 and 1957.

He joined the Istanbul City Theatres in 1959 with the play Yaramaz Çocuk, working there as both an actor and a director until his retirement in 1982, and was named Best Character Actor three times by an American critics' circle. Also known for the plays he translated and directed, he won an award in 1976 for his translation of Issız Topraklar (Desolate Lands) and directed Amadeus; in 1966 he published a poetry collection, Sığıl Taş Olsa.

He appeared on screen far less often than on stage, but showed himself a skilled film actor nonetheless: after the 1979 series Yorgun Savaşçı, he appeared in Ölürayak (1990), played Tahir in Cazibe Hanımın Gündüz Düşleri (1992) and Katip in Akrebin Yolculuğu (1997), and also did voice work for film and television. Interest in his work returned after his death, when Istanbul theatres revived Amadeus in 2020 and 2021.
