Jean-Pierre Melville — Biography
Jean-Pierre Melville was born Jean-Pierre Grumbach on 20 October 1917 in the 9th arrondissement of Paris and died on 2 August 1973 in the same city. A French director, screenwriter, producer and actor of Jewish descent, he fought with the French Resistance in the Second World War, where he took the wartime alias Melville out of admiration for the American novelist Herman Melville, keeping the name for his filmmaking career once peace returned.
He is regarded as a guiding figure behind the French New Wave and among the earliest fully independent French filmmakers to reach both box-office and critical success. His crime pictures Bob le flambeur, Le Doulos, Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge, alongside war-themed films such as Le Silence de la mer and Army of Shadows, remain his best-known work. A spare, existential yet stylish take on noir left a lasting mark on later filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, and he was honored with the Legion d'Honneur.
