Pierre Ménès — Biography
Football commentary is what Pierre Ménès, a French sports journalist, analyst and presenter, is best known for. A career that began in print turned him into a television pundit who argued the game from the studio desk, and his place on the Canal+ programme Canal Football Club, which analyses matches from across Europe, became the post he is most associated with. He left Canal+ and C8 in July 2021.
His father was an insurer and his mother an English teacher; he fenced as a young man until a moped accident that broke his leg and wrist forced him to stop. After studying at Paris Nanterre University he began work at L'Équipe in 1983, covering Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and stayed 21 years. He made his first television appearances on the channel belonging to the newspaper's group and became widely known on M6. In 2005 he spent a year as director of development at Stade de Reims, and in 2009 he joined the Canal+ team. He also appeared on other television and radio programmes and was one of the two French commentators on EA Sports' FIFA video games.
Outside sport he appeared in small film roles in French comedies such as Il était une fois dans l'oued (2005), Big City (2007), Neuilly sa mère! (2009) and Beur sur la ville (2011).
