Archimedes the Tramp (Archimède le clochard) (translated)

Archimède le clochard is a Franco-Italian comedy-drama directed by Gilles Grangier, released on 8 April 1959. English-language audiences know it as The Magnificent Tramp. Shot in French and running about 76 minutes, the film blends comedy with social drama. Jean Gabin plays the title role, Archimède.

Bernard Blier and Dora Doll appear alongside Gabin, and the cast also lists Darry Cowl, Bernard Lajarrige, Bernard Musson, Charles Blavette and Charles Bouillaud. The screenplay is by Albert Valentin and Michel Audiard, but the starting idea was Gabin's own: the credits acknowledge it as an original idea of Jean Moncorgé, which was the actor's real name.

The film competed at the 9th Berlin International Film Festival and was in the running for the Golden Bear, which went to another French film, Les Cousins. Gabin nevertheless took the Silver Bear for Best Actor for his performance as Archimède.
