Grain (Buğday)

Written and directed by Semih Kaplanoğlu, Grain (Buğday) is a 2017 post-apocalyptic science fiction drama shot in black and white with English as its original language. A co-production between Turkey, France and Germany, the roughly 128-minute film took about five years to make, with filming carried out in the United States, Germany and Turkey. Through drought, famine, refugee crises and genetically modified seeds, it portrays a world on the verge of collapse in the near future.

The story follows seed genetics expert Professor Erol Erin, whose path crosses with Cemil, a scientist who abandoned a brilliant career and exhausting city life to turn his back on the modern world, in a region known as the Dead Lands. As the two set out in search of seeds to bring back to life, the journey transforms everything Erol has ever learned. Jean-Marc Barr, Ermin Bravo and Grigoriy Dobrygin lead the cast. The film had its world premiere on 12 August 2017 at the Sarajevo Film Festival and won the Grand Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
