Europe (Europa) (translated)

Europa (released as Zentropa in North America) is a 1991 historical drama directed by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier, who co-wrote the screenplay with Niels Vørsel. A Danish-led production backed by companies from Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain, it is von Trier's third theatrical feature and the concluding chapter of his Europa trilogy, following The Element of Crime (1984) and Epidemic (1987).

The idealistic young Leopold Kessler returns to Germany after World War II and takes a minor job with the Zentropa railway company where his uncle works; his journey aboard the train becomes a dark experience filled with love, passion, loyalty and betrayal. The international ensemble includes Jean-Marc Barr, Barbara Sukowa, Udo Kier, Ernst-Hugo Järegård, Eddie Constantine and Max von Sydow, and the film marked the first of many collaborations between Barr and von Trier. Influenced by Franz Kafka's Amerika, with music by Joachim Holbek, the film won three awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
