Giuseppe Verdi
Directed by Carmine Gallone, this 1938 Italian biographical picture brings to the screen the life story of the celebrated opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). The screenplay was a joint effort by Lucio D'Ambra and Gallone himself.
Fosco Giachetti portrays Verdi, with Gaby Morlay and Germana Paolieri among the supporting players. Casting Giachetti was a calculated decision: his recent success in patriotic parts made him a natural fit for underlining the composer's nationalist spirit.
Shooting took place at the Cinecittà studios in Rome. Made during the fascist era and sometimes linked to the ideology of the period, the film was released in some markets under alternative titles.
