Indochine

Movie · 1992 · 2 people

Directed by Régis Wargnier, this 1992 French period drama is set in colonial French Indochina from the 1930s through the 1950s. Éliane Devries, a wealthy Frenchwoman running a rubber plantation near Saigon, leads a quiet life with her father and Camille, her adopted Vietnamese daughter. Éliane has a brief romance with Jean-Baptiste, a young naval officer she meets at an auction, but the bond between mother and daughter fractures when Camille falls for the same man. Éliane arranges for the officer to be transferred far away, yet Camille will not abandon him and goes in search of him, a path that draws her into the Vietnamese nationalist movement rising across the country. Starring Catherine Deneuve and Vincent Pérez, the film won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and brought Deneuve a Best Actress Oscar nomination. It also received five César Awards.
