The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez (Jandarma St. Tropez'de)

Movie · 1964–1981 · 2 people

The Troops of St. Tropez is a 1964 French-Italian comedy directed by Jean Girault and starring Louis de Funès, with a screenplay by Richard Balducci, Jean Girault and Jacques Vilfrid. Set in the fashionable Riviera resort of Saint-Tropez, it is the first entry in the popular Gendarme series.

The story follows Ludovic Cruchot, an overzealous gendarmerie sergeant transferred to the seaside town, where he must whip a slack brigade into shape, cope with nudists and summer tourists, and deal with his daughter Nicole's newfound desire for freedom. Michel Galabru plays Warrant Officer Gerber. A surprise box-office triumph that topped the French charts in 1964 with over 7.8 million admissions, the film launched de Funès's career to new heights and spawned five sequels over nearly two decades.
