Claude Chabrol directed Les Biches (The Does), a 1968 French-Italian drama, from a screenplay he wrote with Paul Gégauff. It runs about a hundred minutes. It is regarded as the first film of the French New Wave to treat love between women openly, and it is also counted among erotic and LGBT-themed films. In France it drew an audience of 627,164.

At its centre is Frédérique, a wealthy woman who takes in a young homeless woman she meets on the street. Stéphane Audran plays Frédérique and Jacqueline Sassard the young woman, with Jean-Louis Trintignant also starring. The cast includes Nane Germon, Serge Bento, Henri Attal and Dominique Zardi as well. The triangle ends in a violent outcome.

Though the film credits no literary source, it is loosely based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, with the genders of the main characters switched. Gégauff had already adapted the novel as Purple Noon in 1960. André Génovès produced it and Pierre Jansen wrote the music. Audran won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 18th Berlin International Film Festival for the role.
