N. a pris les dés...

N. a pris les dés... is an experimental film from 1971 by French writer and director Alain Robbe-Grillet. Robbe-Grillet, who also wrote the screenplay, structured the film with a narrative style close to independent and underground cinema. The film, with music by Michel Fano, is originally in French and is classified as a drama.

The film's most striking aspect is its production method: Robbe-Grillet agreed to create two separate films from the same shots, editing the same scenes in different ways to create two entirely distinct narratives. The first of these is Eden and After, and the second is N. a pris les dés... There is also a play on the titles of the two films; the title of the second film is an anagram created by rearranging the letters of the original French title of the first.

Both films tell the same story in terms of content; however , N. a pris les dés... presents the events from the perspective of a male character instead of a female character, and the narrator's voice is transferred to him. Thus, the same visual material acquires a completely different meaning only through editing and voice acting choices. In this respect, the film is considered a typical example of Robbe-Grillet's work that brought the narrative experimentation of the new novel movement to the cinema.
