Of Money and Blood

Of Money and Blood (D'argent et de sang)

TV Series · 2023–2024 · 3 people

Venice gave Of Money and Blood (French: D'argent et de sang) its world premiere, out of competition, on 31 August 2023, before Canal+, for which the French crime drama and thriller miniseries was made, ran it from 16 October 2023 until 19 February 2024. Xavier Giannoli created it, wrote it with Antoine Lacomblez and shared the directing with Frédéric Planchon; Curiosa Films is the production company.

The subject is the carbon quota VAT fraud that hit France and Europe in 2008 and 2009, treated here as the scam of the century. On a brand-new market for carbon quotas, set up to fight global warming, billions of euros went up in smoke. The series follows an alliance between a gang of crooks from Belleville and a trader from the wealthy districts, with an obsessive investigator on their trail, and as events unfold, human passions come into play beyond simple self-interest.

Vincent Lindon, Niels Schneider and Ramzy Bedia lead the cast, joined by Judith Chemla, David Ayala, Olga Kurylenko, Yvan Attal, André Marcon, Victoire Du Bois, Matthias Jacquin and Lyes Kaouh. The series is adapted from the 2018 book of the same name by Mediapart journalist Fabrice Arfi.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Telling a real fraud case as a miniseries is the right call: the affair has too many layers for a single film, yet it is not sprawling enough for a long-running show. The partnership between crooks from Belleville and a trader from the wealthy districts puts cast chemistry at the heart of the series, and the obsessive investigator chasing them adds a third centre of gravity. The story does not fully click until you grasp how carbon quotas and the VAT scheme work, so the opening episodes can feel a bit like a lesson. Those who stick with it get a solid crime drama that broadens as the characters' passions take over.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

This is not a guns-and-chases series; the tension comes from following the money rather than from firearms. An obsessive investigator hunting the fraudsters is good ground for cat and mouse. Still, if you want fast action, the financial detail and long conversations may slow the pace for you. Better suited to those who enjoy crime thrillers as a battle of wits.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The series shows how a market set up to fight global warming turned into a vast playground for fraud, and that sets it apart from an ordinary heist story. A new system created with good intentions becoming the scene of losses running into billions of euros makes you think about how tightly climate policy and finance are bound together. The alliance between Belleville crooks and a trader from the wealthy districts also opens an interesting window onto class divides in France. Being adapted from a book by a Mediapart journalist shows that the series stands on a foundation of investigative reporting.
