We Have a Pope

We Have a Pope (Habemus Papam) is a 2011 French-Italian comedy-drama directed by Nanni Moretti, who co-wrote the screenplay with Francesco Piccolo and Federica Pontremoli. Taking its title from the Latin phrase announcing the election of a new pope, the film premiered in Italy in April 2011 and competed at the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

Michel Piccoli stars as Cardinal Melville, who is elected pope against his wishes and feels unequal to the office. After he flees the ceremony meant to present him to the public, psychoanalyst Brezzi, played by Moretti himself, is called in to help him overcome his panic. The new pope remains unconvinced and eventually escapes the Vatican altogether, blending into the crowds as an ordinary man.
