Margherita Buy — Biography

Margherita Buy is an Italian screen and stage actress, also credited as a director, born in Rome on 15 January 1962. After training at the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica, she worked in theatre before making her film debut in 1988 with It's Happening Tomorrow. Her breakthrough came in 2001 when she played Antonia in The Ignorant Fairies, a role that established her as one of Italian cinema's leading actresses. She has since become a frequent collaborator of directors such as Nanni Moretti, Ferzan Özpetek, and Sergio Rubini, appearing in titles including We Have a Pope, My Mother, The Caiman, and Manual of Love. Buy holds one of the strongest award records in Italian film, having won the David di Donatello for Best Actress seven times and the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actress eight times, alongside a Silver Shell from the San Sebastián Film Festival.
