Margherita Buy — Biography
Born in Rome to a family of French and Tuscan background, Buy trained at the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica and worked in theatre before her breakthrough in Duccio Tessari's 1986 film Una grande storia d'amore, followed by Daniele Luchetti's It's Happening Tomorrow (1988) and The Week of the Sphinx (1990), the latter earning her the Silver Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival. That same year she appeared in La stazione, directed by Sergio Rubini, whom she briefly married, winning her first David di Donatello and Nastro d'Argento. She made four films with director Giuseppe Piccioni, gained international recognition playing Antonia in The Ignorant Fairies, and kept adding to her award tally with films such as Caterina in the Big City and Manuale d'amore. Her role in Nanni Moretti's Il Caimano, screened at Cannes, won her a Ciak d'oro, and she went on to work with Moretti again on We Have a Pope and My Mother; she also reunited repeatedly with Ferzan Özpetek, including Şahane Misafir and Bir Ömür Yetmez. With seven David di Donatello and eight Nastro d'Argento awards for Best Actress to date, she holds one of Italian cinema's strongest award records. Her daughter, Caterina De Angelis, is also an actress.
