Kim Rossi Stuart — Biography

On both sides of the camera, Kim Rossi Stuart has built a presence in Italian cinema as an actor and director. Wide audiences know him as Freddo in Michele Placido's Romanzo Criminale (2005), while critics have tended to single out his psychologically complex characters in auteur films. His acting stands out in films about real people such as Vallanzasca - Angels of Evil and Piano, solo, and in the films he directed himself.

He grew up in an acting family; his father was Giacomo Rossi Stuart, an actor of Italian and Scottish descent. He began acting at five, studied theatre, and at fourteen left home and school to pursue the profession. From 1986 he worked regularly: a small part in The Name of the Rose was followed by the Fantaghirò television series and Valentina, and Karate Warrior and Policemen made him popular. He then turned to quality productions only: Heartless, Antonioni's Beyond the Clouds, then Lucignolo in Pinocchio and Le chiavi di casa. He also returned to the stage in Re Lear.

He began directing with Anche libero va bene (2006), which he also wrote and starred in; it brought him the David di Donatello and the Nastro d'Argento for best new director. A Question of the Heart, Wondrous Boccaccio and Tommaso followed. In 2020 his lead role in Francesco Bruni's Cosa sarà (Everything's Gonna Be Alright) won him the Nastro d'Argento and Italy's Golden Globe, the Globo d'oro, for best actor.
