Semih Kaplanoğlu — Biography

Semih Kaplanoğlu (born 4 April 1963 in İzmir) is a Turkish film director, screenwriter, producer and editor. He graduated from the Cinema and Television department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylül University. In 1984 he moved to Istanbul, where he worked as a copywriter for advertising agencies such as Güzel Sanatlar, Saatchi & Saatchi and Young & Rubicam, and served as a camera assistant on Süha Arın's documentaries.

After directing the television series Şehnaz Tango (1994), he made his feature debut with Herkes Kendi Evinde (2000), followed by Meleğin Düşüşü (2004). He gained international recognition with the "Yusuf Trilogy" — Yumurta (2007), Süt (2008) and Bal (2010); Bal won the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. He is regarded, alongside Nuri Bilge Ceylan, as one of the best-known figures of contemporary Turkish cinema.

He later directed Buğday (2017), Bağlılık Aslı (2019) and Bağlılık Hasan (2021), the latter chosen as Turkey's submission for the Academy Awards.
