Ali and Nino (Ali ve Nino) (translated)

Ali and Nino is a 2016 British-Azerbaijani film. Adapted from the 1937 novel of the same name by the pseudonymous author Kurban Said, with a screenplay by Christopher Hampton and direction by Asif Kapadia, it is set in Azerbaijan on the eve of World War I and follows the doomed romance between a Muslim youth and a Christian Georgian girl across lines of faith and culture.

Shot largely on location in Turkey and Azerbaijan, the film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2016. Its leads are María Valverde and Adam Bakri, and according to our records the cast also includes Turkish actor Halit Ergenç.
