Separation (Ayrılık) (translated)
Originally titled Die Fremde, Ayrılık (When We Leave) is a 2010 German-Turkish co-production drama written and directed by Feo Aladağ in her feature debut. Umay, a young woman born and raised in Germany, moves to Istanbul after marrying, but the violence she suffers there drives her to flee back to her family in Berlin with her young son. Her conservative family rejects her for leaving her husband and staining their honor, and her return tears a deep rift in a household already under pressure from its community. Umay struggles to build an independent life for herself and her child.
Shot in German and Turkish, the film stars Sibel Kekilli alongside Derya Alabora, Florian Lukas, Settar Tanrıöğen, Tamer Yiğit, Nursel Köse and Ufuk Bayraktar. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2010, won multiple German Film Awards including Best Film and Best Actress, and was chosen as Germany's submission for the foreign-language film Oscar.
