Times and Winds (Beş Vakit)

Movie · 2006 · 9 people

Times and Winds (Beş Vakit) is a 2006 Turkish drama film written and directed by Reha Erdem, his fourth feature film. Shot in the village of Kozlu in Çanakkale, it is set in a mountainous village overlooking the sea, where time is marked only by the five daily calls to prayer and villagers live by raising animals, bound to the rhythm of nature. The Turkish title refers both to the prayer times and to the five periods of the day through which the film unfolds.

The story follows the inner lives of three children growing up in the village: Ömer, Yakup, and Yıldız. Confronted early with hatred and violence through their resentment of their own parents, they approach adulthood the more they try to escape it. The film won Best Turkish Film of the Year at the Istanbul International Film Festival, earned multiple SİYAD awards, and brought Reha Erdem a best director prize at the Bucharest Film Festival.
