Busra (Büşra) (translated)

Büşra is a Turkish drama film directed by Alper Çağlar from a screenplay he co-wrote with Bahadır Boysal. It brings to the screen Boysal's comic-strip heroine of the same name, published weekly in the satirical magazine Leman, and opened in theaters on March 19, 2010, with a running time of roughly 105 minutes.

On screen, the heroine carries on the freewheeling adventures of her print incarnation, moving through settings that range from a headscarf fashion show to masked balls, while the contradictions peculiar to Turkish society keep complicating life for her and the people around her. The story is woven from the knotting together of four lonely individuals, four different outlooks and four tragic tales, and it closes on a bleak observation: in societies without tolerance, people are condemned to loneliness.

The cast includes Tayanç Ayaydın, Çiğdem Batur, Kaan Urgancıoğlu, Enise Ütük and Mine Kılıç. Arriving after screen versions of Turkish comic heroes such as Tarkan and Kara Murat, the film stood out as a rare cinema outing for a character born in a weekly humor magazine, and its politically charged subject drew heavy criticism from different camps of a polarized public during its release.
