Au revoir les enfants (Hoşçakalın Çocuklar)

Au revoir les enfants (Goodbye, Children) is a 1987 autobiographical drama written, produced and directed by Louis Malle. A co-production between France, Italy and Germany, it draws on the director's own boyhood at a Catholic boarding school near Fontainebleau and on the real deeds of Père Jacques, a priest and headmaster who sheltered Jewish children during the Holocaust. The film also marked Malle's return to French cinema after a decade working in Hollywood.

Set in a boarding school in occupied France during the winter of 1944, the story follows pupil Julien Quentin, who forms a hesitant, then deep friendship with newcomer Jean Bonnet. Julien eventually learns that Jean is one of several Jewish boys hidden under false names by the school. When the Gestapo arrives, their innocent bond ends in tragedy. The film won the Golden Lion at the 44th Venice Film Festival and went on to receive seven César Awards.
