British Kemal vs. Lawrence (İngiliz Kemal Lawrense Karşı) (translated)
İngiliz Kemal Lawrense Karşı (British Kemal vs. Lawrence) is a black-and-white Turkish spy-adventure film directed by Lütfi Ö. Akad in 1952. The story is set in occupied Istanbul in 1919. It follows the adventures of the Turkish intelligence agent İngiliz Kemal and gathers love, intrigue and secret-service rivalry into one plot. It is counted among the early Yeşilçam productions with a historical backdrop.
At a time when France and Britain cannot agree over the occupation of Anatolia, the French secret service sends a female agent to Istanbul. Her task is to work against the British and spoil the plans of Lawrence, who is in the city. Ayhan Işık plays İngiliz Kemal/Esat and Gülistan Güzey plays Leman; Muzaffer Tema is Lawrence and Pola Morelli is Jeanette. The cast also includes Talat Artemel, Muazzez Arçay, Hasan Ceylan and Feridun Çölgeçen. A boxing match, a murder at sea and fight scenes are among its key set pieces.
Akad wrote the script with Osman F. Seden, working from Seden's story. Seden produced it for Kemal Film. The music is by Kadri Şençalar and the cinematography by Enver Burçkin. A review from the period, written after Akad's Kanun Namına with nearly the same cast, blamed the script for its failure.
