Jefferson in Paris (Jefferson à Paris)
James Ivory directed the 1995 historical drama Jefferson in Paris, known during production as Head and Heart. A French-American co-production from Touchstone Pictures, spoken in English and French, it runs about 139 minutes and was written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. It offers a semi-fictional account of the years Thomas Jefferson spent as United States ambassador to France before his presidency, and it was selected for the competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Newly widowed, Jefferson grows close to the Italian-English artist Maria Cosway in a Paris on the eve of revolution. Sally Hemings, the young enslaved girl he takes into his home to look after his daughters, affects him deeply and draws him toward a forbidden relationship. Nick Nolte plays Jefferson, with Greta Scacchi as Cosway, Thandiwe Newton as Hemings and Gwyneth Paltrow as his daughter Patsy. Michael Lonsdale, James Earl Jones, Simon Callow, Lambert Wilson and Jean-Pierre Aumont are also in the cast.
The film grossed roughly $5.9 million on a $14 million budget and was considered a critical and commercial failure.
