Les Visiteurs

Les Visiteurs is a 1993 French fantasy comedy directed by Jean-Marie Poiré, who co-wrote the screenplay with Christian Clavier. In 12th-century France, knight Godefroy de Montmirail (Jean Reno) and his squire Jacquouille (Christian Clavier) enlist a wizard's help to travel back a few days and undo a tragic mistake. When the spell goes wrong, the pair are hurled instead into the late 20th century, where they find themselves bewildered by modern life and must find a way home. Clavier also plays Jacquart, Jacquouille's descendant, while Valérie Lemercier, Marie-Anne Chazel and Isabelle Nanty appear in supporting roles. The film drew around 14 million admissions, becoming the highest-grossing French release of 1993 and remaining one of the country's biggest box-office successes. It received eight César nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress for Lemercier. Its open-ended finale led to two sequels, in 1998 and 2016, as well as an English-language remake released in 2001. Filming took place at the Château d'Ermenonville and the medieval citadel of Carcassonne.
