Lemon Tree (Limon Ağacı) (translated)

TV Series · 2008 · 12 people

ATV broadcast the Turkish family comedy series Limon Ağacı (Lemon Tree) in 2008. Produced by Sinan Çetin, it follows the romance between a small-town girl and a wealthy young city heir, played for laughs through the clash between their two very different families. It gave Serenay Sarıkaya one of her first lead roles, opposite Kaan Urgancıoğlu.

Peri (Serenay Sarıkaya), a girl from a provincial town, takes a job at the family firm that Kaan (Kaan Urgancıoğlu) was put in charge of at a young age. He soon falls for her, but after a few of her decisions cost the company money she is let go and heads home. Kaan refuses to give up: he follows her to the town and settles there. Watching, and meddling in, this stubborn pursuit are the two families: the loud, quarrelsome Solmaz household and the proud, scheming Karabudun clan. The cast also includes Zuhal Gencer (Behice), Bülent Kayabaş (Osman), Selda Özer (Handan), Cevdet Arıcılar (Dündar), Burak Altay (Ali), Yeliz Şar (Seher), Keiko Beril Yarar, Aylin Kontente, Kubilay Tunçer, Tarhan Karagöz and Ayça Varlıer.

Deniz Ergun directed the series and co-wrote it with Mahinur Ergun and Fırat Parlak; the music is by Can Hakgüder. It ran for a single season.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Limon Ağacı is a light romantic comedy that gets its laughs from two families at each other's throats. The story of small-town Peri and city boy Kaan is simple and easy to follow. The squabbles between the noisy Solmaz family and the haughty Karabudun clan will make kids laugh too. Heavy themes are close to absent. It's an easy watch after dinner with grandparents and children together. And with just one season, it's easy to finish.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

The best reason to put on Limon Ağacı today is to see Serenay Sarıkaya in one of her first lead roles, opposite Kaan Urgancıoğlu. The setup is classic but charming: a stubborn Kaan who settles in the small town after Peri loses her job and heads home. The real colour comes from the two families, though; the rowdy Solmaz household and the scheming Karabuduns often steal scenes from the leading couple. To be honest, because the show stopped at one season, the supporting characters' stories feel like they never fully open up. Still, it's a pleasant one-season watch you can finish over a weekend.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Limon Ağacı leans on one of Turkish television's safest formulas: wealthy heir meets small-town girl, city versus province, two feuding families. Produced by Sinan Çetin and directed by Deniz Ergun, the series chooses to repeat this template rather than refresh it. The families are defined by almost a single trait each; one is loud, the other haughty. Caricatures like these may raise laughs in the early episodes, but humour drawn from the same clash wears thin after a while. The youthful energy of Serenay Sarıkaya and Kaan Urgancıoğlu is the liveliest part of the show, yet the script gives them little material to step outside the formula. Its single season may well be explained by that impasse.
