Shabanoglu Shaban (Şabanoğlu Şaban) (translated)
Kemal Sunal's Şaban character is the centre of Şabanoğlu Şaban, a Turkish comedy from 1977. Ertem Eğilmez directed it from a screenplay by Sadık Şendil, and Arzu Film made it. It opened on December 1, 1977 and runs about 90 minutes. Nahit Ataman produced it, Hüseyin Özşahin was the cinematographer, and the film has since been restored in HD.
Şaban (Kemal Sunal) wears out his commander Hüsamettin (Şener Şen) with his clumsiness during military service, and after discharge he plays music with his friend Ramazan (Halit Akçatepe). Both fall for Nigar (Ayben Erman), who performs kanto at the same venue. Unexpectedly, they catch Kadırgalı Eşref (Dinçer Çekmez), the crook Commissioner Hüsamettin and his whole force could never nab. As a reward, Nazır Pasha (Sıtkı Akçatepe) makes them secret policemen. When the pasha's sister's diamond is stolen, Şaban and Ramazan start searching his mansion for it. The cast also includes Adile Naşit as Hala (the aunt), Ayşen Gruda as Safinaz, Şevket Altuğ as Captain Yunus, and Sevda Aktolga and Sevil Üstekin.
With its mansion, horse-drawn carriage, pistols and disguises, the film has the flavor of an adventure comedy set against the mobilization years of the late Ottoman era.
